Receding gums is a condition that exposes more of the teeth or the root of the teeth. When this happens, gaps are formed between the teeth and the gumline. Bacteria can quickly build up there and lead to several periodontal diseases. Therefore, it would be best to visit a periodontist immediately when you notice the gum tissue receding. If not, it will lead to tooth loss and severe tooth damage.

The reasons for receding gums

Three out of every four adults suffer from periodontal disease. The disease starts because of bacteria and plaque buildup in the gums and teeth. The plaque then damages the gums and causes them to recede. It also weakens the teeth.

Periodontal diseases

The foremost cause of receding gums is gum disease or periodontal disease. People with gum diseases have bacteria growing in their mouths. However, it is essential to remember that not all gum diseases lead to gum recession. It only becomes severe when left untreated.

Genes

As much as 30% of the population may be susceptible to gum diseases and, thus, to gum recession. Even those with good oral and dental hygiene might find themselves dealing with gum disease problems. Consulting with a professional will help deter these diseases. In addition, identifying the signs early on will help those predisposed to develop periodontal diseases to eliminate the risks.

Dental care

Aggressive brushing and insufficient dental care can both lead to gum recession. Brushing the teeth too aggressively or the wrong way will remove the enamel of the teeth. As a result, it weakens the teeth and makes them more prone to gum diseases. On the other hand, not having proper dental hygiene, such as inadequate brushing and flossing, will also lead to periodontal infections. Using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help keep the teeth healthy.

Hormonal changes

Gum diseases in women usually come when they are experiencing hormonal changes. Puberty, pregnancy, and menopause make gums more sensitive and vulnerable. Even if they maintain proper dental hygiene, the changes in their bodies make them more susceptible to periodontal diseases and gum recession. For example, the decline in estrogen during the menopausal stage weakens the bones and leads to tooth decay.

Tobacco and other activities

Smoking never does any good. Smokers will have a sticky plaque in the gums that can be difficult to remove. It causes gum diseases and gum recession. Other vices and activities such as clenching and grinding the teeth can also recede gums. Piercings on the lip or tongue can irritate the gums and wear them away.

Protect your dental and oral health

You should never ignore gum and teeth problems. These do not only lead to physical pain, but they have psychological consequences, too, due to the loss of teeth. It is hard to feel confident and develop social skills when you have a dental and oral health problem. Ensure you consult the dentist at the first sign of a dental problem.
